English: Grade 1

In class, students are able tread short sentences. My target for them is to write their own sentences. They participate in “read aloud sessions”. Students are developing their ability to retell and guess stories and paragraphs. They are also learning new vocabulary, as they read along. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.
Parents can help by:

  • Talking about favorite storybooks
  • Reading with children and encouraging them to read to you
  • Suggest that children write short sentences for friends or siblings
  • Encourage children to share what they have learned about their writing and reading. Help children build lists of commonly used words from their writing and reading.

English Studies: Grade 2

Students were asked in the beginning of the first term to read for 20 minutes each night, at home.  Students are expected to continue with this.  In class, students will continue to participate in daily “read aloud” and “reading response” sessions where we will be learning about story patterns, descriptive language, plots and characters.  Students will be developing their ability to retell, reflect and relate and we will use many different mediums to this end throughout the upcoming months. Proper sentence formation is being developed. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.

Social Studies: Grade 1

Students are learning about directions e.g. left, right, above, below, north, south, east, and west. They will also learn about Canada. Canada Day, the flag and the multicultural society of Canada. Students will be expected to make a colourful presentation about Canada. This assignment will be due in the 2nd week of February. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.

Social Studies: Grade 2

January –March we will be doing research on the Globe, the continents and the compass rose (North, South, East, West), Traditions and Cultures of different countries around the world and as well as on specific countries. They will be expected to make a presentation about a country of their choice. This assignment will be due in 2nd week of February. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.

Math: Grade 1

Addition and Subtraction 0-20:
First graders will be learning how tadd and subtract numbers 0- 20. They will explore “doubles ” and solve simple addition and subtraction problems. Students will learn how to skip count by 2, 5, and 10 as well as grouping by these numbers.
Data Management and Probability:
In this unit, students will be learning about making graphs and probability concepts such as: likely, unlikely, probably. Students will be able tcompare, sort, and organize objects intreal-life graphs.They will alslearn how tread graphs and ask questions about the information on the graphs. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.

Math: Grade 2

Addition and Subtraction 0- 100:

In this unit, students will be learning about addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers and developing an algorithm for finding and recording solutions.

The learning goals for this unit are:

  • Model 2 digit numbers on a place value mat.
  • Pose and solve number problems requiring addition or subtraction.
  • Use the standard algorithm as one way to add and subtract 2 or 3 digit numbers.

Graphing – Students will learn to create a tally table and record information in pictographs and bar graphs using data. They will also learn how to compare and make predictions based on the data that they organized into graphs.

Geometry- Students will learn how to describe, compare, sort and represent 3-D solids according to their attributes. They will be able to identify and name different 3-D objects such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, prisms, and pyramids. Please check agenda daily for any homework assigned.

 

French: Grade 1
